Rome Free Academy senior offensive and defensive lineman Tommy Dunn
has been named to the inaugural Great American Rivalry Series Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame Team,
the series announced in partnership with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Dunn is one of four players
from New York chosen to the 25-player squad chosen from 144 nominees.
“The 25 players named to this inaugural Scholar-Athlete team are shining examples of what’s possible
when the Values of the Pro Football Hall of Fame are demonstrated on the field and in the classroom,”
said spokesman Pat Lindesmith. “Leading others by showing that level of Commitment, Integrity, Courage,
Respect and Excellence every day will result in many successes for the rest of their lives.”
The Great American Rivalry Series, now in its 17th year, recognizes scholar-athletes for their on the field and
in the classroom successes. All the GARS scholar-athletes were awarded college scholarships and
commemorative plaques recognizing their placement on the team.
The voting process that ran for almost two months allowed students, parents, fans and community members
to vote and show support for nominees. The 25 with the most votes earned their spot on the team along with
an additional scholarship. Dunn earned an initial $500 scholarship for nomination, though the additional
scholarship information was not announced.
RFA head football coach Jake DerCola praised Dunn’s work on and off the field. Dunn, who holds one of the
highest grade point averages on the team, “takes pride in being in the top of the class.”
He said it was unfortunate because of COVID-19 that there was no Rivalry Series game for RFA in the fall
where Dunn could be recognized. But, he said, it was a credit to Dunn that he was one of the top few
vote-getters throughout the process and the community showed support for him.
Dunn, as the team’s center and a competitor for a spot on defense, wanted to play on both sides of the ball
this season, DerCola noted. He was sick for the Baldwinsville game last year, and his loss was missed
as an anchor. “He’s one of the better snappers I’ve coached. He doesn’t want one bad snap,” no matter the conditions.
DerCola said he’s hoping for the Fall II sports season, where some higher-risk fall sports were moved for a
possible March start in 2021. “I’m crossing my fingers, hopefully we get something.” Even a shortened season,
to have an opportunity. he said, would be great for the seniors and all the players. “Come first of March, we’ll be ready.”
