Lucille Schafer Kohler
Lucille Schafer Kohler Clark Mills
Lucille was a tiny vivacious little lady who, on January 15, 2013, two weeks short of her 94th birthday,
left us after a long, healthy, happy and active life. Lucille was born on February 3, 1919, in New Hartford, NY,
the daughter of Arthur and Anna Gaffey Schafer. She was raised in Sauquoit and graduated from
Sauquoit High School in 1937. Being lucky in love, she had two great marriages. On October 28, 1938,
she married Edward J. Grant, Jr., at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Chadwicks. Eddie passed away in 1949.
On November 10, 1956, she married John Kohler. He passed away in 2010 after 54 years of marriage.
During WW II, she worked in the Willowvale Bleachery. Later on, she worked at the Sauquoit Post Office
and for her brother, Russell, bottling milk for Schafer's Dairy. Mom also enjoyed the good times that
she had for many years helping the Kress family on the Clam Bakes at the Old Spain in Chadwicks.
Lucille was currently a member of the Church of the Annunciation in Clark Mills. In the past,
she was an active member of the Sauquoit Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, St. Anthony of Padua Church
Altar Rosary Society, the Friday Night Bowling League and her Pinochle Club. A loving woman,
she was the caretaker for her family, always putting other people's needs before her own.
She leaves behind her daughter, Barbara Grant LaBarge and her companion, Richard Bearse, Jr.;
her grandchildren, Edward and Geraldine LaBarge, of Utica, Keith and Kathleen LaBarge, of Sauquoit,
Karl LaBarge, Jr., and Debbie Storsberg, of Clayville, and William and Shelly LaBarge, of MI;
her five grandchildren, Russell, Lauren, Andrew, Joshua and Pierre LaBarge;
her brother, Gerald Schafer, of Sauquoit; her sister, Marilyn Wilder, of IL;
many nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Kate Doran.
She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Russell and Lawrence.
Lucille's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 19, at 10:30
at St. Patrick's-St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Chadwicks.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours will be Saturday at church from 9:30 until the time of the Mass.
