Concert History of a Retired "Teenager"

Objective:
Document concert experiences using internet resources, memories and old ticket stubs.
Conclusion:

Ticket stubs, setlist and google searches provided most of what appears below.
Venue information appears at the bottom on the venue legend .
Hope some of these memories are useful to you.
LOCKN 2015 opened the floodgates for me and motivated me to get my shit together.

If you have a comment or care to share a memory, my email appears here .

Fun show but my energy was gone by shows end and we had to hitchhike home
Syracuse State Fairgrounds to Rome NY
A day or so later I started my senior year of HS at Rome Free Academy

The summer ends on a less-than-peaceful note in Syracuse, New York. A so-called Great American Music Fair featuring the Jefferson Starship, Doobie Brothers, New Riders of the Purple Sage and others is marred when a crowd of five hundred attempts to storm the gate, an effort to make the fest a free show. Police and state troopers retaliate, and sixty are arrested in the melee that follows.

The third stadium show on the Rolling Stones 1978 US tour was the US Independence Holiday show on the fourth of July.
The Rolling Stones played to a sold-out 80,000 fans on 7-4-78, at Rich Stadium, Buffalo, New York.
This was the best stadium show of the entire tour. The Rolling Stones played with ferocity and intensity–they just amazed the audience,
despite the fact that they played very few of the crowd-pleasing stadium classics. But when the Rolling Stones refused to do an encore,
the fans became aggressive and hostile. This was the rowdiest, most dangerous crowd of the entire tour
(Mick Jagger asked the crowd to please not throw bottles at Keith as he sung "Happy"-- things were that wild)
it was the fourth of July and they were very drunk, very loud, very rowdy, and when the Rolling Stones would not return to the stage
to do an encore, they trashed the stage with garbage, beer bottles, and anything else that wasn’t nailed down.
They tore down the mouth and tongue stage and almost destroyed it.

Rolling Stones

, Journey, Atlanta Rythym Section, April Wine

Note: "Some Girls", the Stones best selling album was released June 9, 1978 less than a month before this show

Rode with Mike Ashline and Kristy Matt
They picked me up in Rochester.
Mike got arrested as we pulled into Orchard Park for no license, no inspection, no insurance;
he went to jail and his car was impounded.
I had several hundred dollars worth of tickets that I scalped
(Only time I ever scapled; sold at marginal markup; less than TicketMaster)
I bailed Mike out of jail day after show for $300.

  • Darkness on Edge of Town
  • album released several months prior to this show
  • seven of the first nine songs were from this new album
  • Great show, a lot of energy, you could tell Bruce was trying as hard as he could to please.
  • Bruce fell (jumped?) off stage at one point and didn't get back up for about a minute
  • probably a staged move but it added a bit more drama to the event.

It was a remarkably warm day in Utica NY for Nov early evening - in the 60s
and the music was hot

  • Great small venue to catch such a huge talent
  • Phil Collins is talented; I liked the first few Genesis albaums with Phil at the helm
  • Wind and Wuthering, Trick of the Tail
  • Even Phil's first couple of solo albums were pretty good.
  • And Phil is an engaging live performer.
  • But it's clear that Peter wrote and performed better material over longer period
  • And Peter's music stands up better over time (all his material still sounds good)

  • We were feeling better than we had a legal right to that night.
  • As we left the Dome I spotted a highway cone on the sidewalk
  • So naturally I picked it up and proceeded to use it as a meaphone
  • "Step right this way folks"
  • And that amused my concert mates
  • Until I brought the cone into our van and a cop approached the driver window (Eric)
  • "What are you going to do with that? shove it up your ass?"
  • He then asked Eric for his driver's license
  • What happened next was funny
  • Eric had several licenses - NY, CT,.
  • And he gave all of the licenses to the cop
  • Apparently this subterfuge worked ( or the cop couldn't be bothered)
  • He let us go

  • Remarkable things about this show
    1. Hundreds of gatecrashers running past dozens of helpless security guards
    2. Winds picked up, lightning appeared imminent yet
      • scores of concert attendees were pogo sticking up and down with their arms reaching for the sky
    3. Had to ride motorcycle home in rain
    4. by that point of the evening both my bike and myself
    5. were running like shit

excerpt from news article it was the Grateful Dead that people were buzzing about. In fact, many still do. On June 27, 1985 a massive crush of people converged onto the sloping lawn and woods behind the amphitheater; they heard The Dead play a set full of rapid-fire transitions that many would describe years later as electric, surreal and other-worldly. It was the show that drew SPAC’s largest crowd to date, possibly in part because of the attendance cap that was later put in place. With 40,231 Deadheads jamming, the concert has gone down in SPAC lore. There were makeshift tents, lots of weed, hitchhikers and even one audience member hanging off the balcony. Bobby Weir asked him to get down, at which point he fell, got up and was seemingly fine. The Dead were banned from SPAC for three years.

We had inside seats for this show and a good view of the stage
Went to show to see Aerosmith and didn't expect to like GnR
(From what little I knew Axl struck me as somewhat of a dirtbag)
but GnR was impressive, even Axl, especially Slash
He had the rock star persona and the chops to back it up.

When I saw the core of GnR play in Velvet Revolver
I really gained appreciation for talent of the bassist and drummer

Note: I moved to current home in Apr 1994, most of my concert ticket stubs from 1989 - 1993 were misplaced; will need alternative means to remember these shows. Top

  • For everybody that did not attend Woodstock '99 (and perhaps some who did)
    • this festival will be remembered for the minor rioting, looting and vandalism that occurred after the music stopped
    • Maybe they shouldn't have handed out candles as Chilli Peppers closed the show (certainly a combustable situation).

  • This was a great event until the one percent fucked it up
  • I can understand frustration by people who felt gouged by vending costs and camping conditions weren't ideal.
  • There were many people already sunburned after the first day and it was sunny and hot all weekend.
  • But the rioters really screwed us out of any chance for a subsequent Woodstock scale show in upstate NY
  • Anybody got the balls to sponsor Woodstock 2019 ?

  • These bands impressed/entertained me. I felt their energy. I understand their popularity
  • DMX, Korn, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Kid Rock, Creed
  • Looking back there were many acts on the other stage I would have liked to have seen.

at this time Aerosmith was broken up due to Tyler's injury
Joe used a German kid to sing Steve Tyler - not bad, but not Steve

Note: I also saw Joe Perry Project show sometime in late 70s or early 80s in Utica or Syracuse.

Pros

This was The Allman Brothers swan song and they nailed it.
Enjoyed acts on the Mushroom Stage which was close enoughto hear well from camp

Cons

Didn't like the view lines from the lawn to the Peach stage so much - obscured by amphitheater roof
Having to carry shit through bus transport from car to camp required several trips each way
- a real hassle and time waster
